Toon Country- Where we salute the "lowest form of entertainment"

Whether you want to admit it or not, you and everybody else loves a good cartoon. They can be happy and care free with simplicity or they can be more complex than some live action shows. On this page I salute the (what I believe to be) top 10 cartoons of all time (as well as some runners-up). I also will have a cartoon of the week. It's time to give some of these cartoons the remembrance and attention they deserve. (The "top 10" are in no particular order)

THE CARTOON OF THE WEEK!!!!

This week's cartoon of the week for 4-17-2005 is

Courage the Cowardly Dog

Courage the cowardly dog is a cartoon about a dog who is practically scared of his own shadow but in the end always ends up saving the day. He was abandoned as a puppy and found by an old woman named Muriel who lives on farmland in an old rickety house in the middle of nowhere with her husband Eustace. Eustace is an old crotchety grumpy man who's catchphrase is "stupid dog". This tells you exactly how grumpy a charecter he is. This show was better when it started because Courage did not talk. In the later years, the wiseguys at Cartoon Network decided to give him a voice so instead of his barking, howling and grunting, a dog talked. Other than that, this show had many little original things about it. The personalities of the charecters like a cat from the "wrong side of the tracks" who constantly wore a big mask and a smart aleck computer who always had answers to problems were among the originalities of this show. This show, to my knowledge, is no longer on t.v. and it is somehow forgotten. This show seemed to have died out very fast. I am tired of seeing great shows die off and not get any remembrance. So many great shows are no longer being aired and nobody ever thinks about it. Why? because they are too busy watching CRAP like teen titans and avatar and "cowboy bebop". I don't know what cowboy bebop and yugi oh and other shows like that are and I DON'T CARE. This is America and instead of watching some Japanese stuff in which everybody has very pointy hair, I think it's time to bring back some great American classics. Starting with Courage the Cowardly Dog. thank you.

p.s.   on the message board somone has left a message that says that i should mention the 3 stooges. To my knowledge the 3 stooges were 3 real human beings. moses horwitz (moe), louis fienberg (larry), and jerome horwitz (curly)  (also joe besser, joe. and joe derita (curly joe). I will give the stooges credit, they were absolute GENIUSES in comedy. Kings among men. But ther lies the problem. I cannot mention them on this site because they were NOT  a cartoon. they were merely men. thank you anyway.

THE SIMPSONS (courtesy of FOX television)

It's pretty hard to have a top 10 list of cartoons and not include a show that has not 1 but 2 world records. A cartoon that has not only had more guest stars than any other show, but is also the longest running cartoon ever. This show blends a little bit of politics (homosexual tolerance, the head of the nuclear power plant running for office, "spoofed" charecters include Bob Dole, Bill Clinton, and George Bush Sr.) with some very good story lines, and then it adds the best ingredient which is a cast of UNFORGETTABLE charecters. Every charecter on this show adds something. Homer adds the kind of dumb witted humor, Marge provides the nagging mother humor, Bart provides the troublemaker humor, Wiggum provides the fat worthless cop, Moe Syzlak, Seymour Skinner, Charles Montgomery Burns. I could go on forever. All these ingredients stirred up together makes for a great t.v. show.

BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD (courtesy of MTV networks)

These two idiots gave voice to so many punk teenage losers. With their stupid idiot antics and their need to always try to "score", these two are so clueless that it is funny. They go to school, they slack the whole time, they go home, they watch music videos and eat nachos, then they do it all over again the next day. Maybe the reason so many kids watched this (myself included) was because we could relate so well. Beavis and Butt-head are the inventors of crude humor in cartoons. They are even the masters of the "one cheek sneak" and the ever popular phrase "I am the Great Cornholio.". Crude humor and a "let somone else do it" attitude is not the only thing this show is known for. With such phrases as "This sucks change it" and "huh huh that was cool", this show is very simple. It is so brilliantly simple, that their is genius in it. It is so stupid that it is brilliant. Beavis and Butt-head, we miss you.

ED, EDD, AND EDDY (courtesy of cartoon network)

A story about 3 boys living in suburbia on a cul-de-sac. With a very interesting blend of many different charecters, this show makes for a very entertaining half hour. It combines a rather slow and stupid boy who is very unkempt (Ed) with a very smart and polite boy who has an obsession with everything being spotless (Edd) and then they throw in a quick talking short boy who's only out to make a buck off of whoever he can (Eddy). The scams they come up with are rather amusing and how they pitch the sale is even more amusing. The other kids on the block range from a blonde girl who is the secret crush of every boy on the block, to a short haired, white t-shirt wearing boy who walks around carrying a piece of lumber all day. The complete lack of parents on this show makes it even more interesting because you never know what these kids will try to pull off next. A very entertaining show. It is my personal favorite. I highly recommend it!

Disney's House of Mouse (courtesy of Disney)

Whoever thought of this show should be involved in the space program. If they were, we would've been living on Jupiter by now. Take all the classic Disney cartoons featuring the original charecters that EVERYBODY loves (Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Etc.) and update them for the 21st century so everybody, including children, can relate to them. The old shows are still funny but let's face it, they are horribly outdated. Nobody rides the train anymore, nobody goes to the circus anymore. Nowadays people talk on cellular phones and use computers. So do the charecters at the House of Mouse. If you never thought you'd see Donald Duck talk on a cell-phone, or Mickey Mouse try to assemble a computer, think again. This show has that and more.  So they make a story about a night-club where all the Disney stars go. Mickey and his friends run the club and in between updated cartoons featuring Mickey and Donald and others, there are plot lines behind the scenes of the club. A very interesting find and a brilliant idea on the part of Disney.

AQUATEEN HUNGERFORCE (courtesy of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim)

NEVER has a show with this much attitude ever been put on the television. This show has so much charecter it will leave you breathless. If you watch this show for the first time you will be sitting there at the end thinking to yourself "what the Fu*k was that??????????" A story of a box of fries (Frylock) that acts as the responsible one of the household, a meatball (Meatwad) who acts as a child who is very sensitive at times, and a shake (Master Shake) who is constantly getting into trouble. With such antics as Master Shake selling Meatwad to the circus for 5 cents, to Meatwad buying an action figure with suicidal depression, to magic leprechauns sending out spam and then muggin people for their shoes, to corrupt aliens from the moon coming to Earth and breaking law after law. This show will NEVER cease to amaze you. If you are looking for a break from the same old thing, this is it. This is a very funny and interesting change from the usual cat and mouse cartoon. (not recommended for people 13 and under)

Pelswick (courtesy of Canadian television)

This is a VERY under-rated show. We don't really have a lot of access to this show because it is Canadian, but if you have digital cable or satellite, then you do have access to it. This is a show about a 13 year old boy who is confined to a wheel chair. The show parodizes life as an adolescent by exagerrating school, teachers, bullies, the craziness of it all, and home life. Pelswick also has a very useless fairy god-parent. Every time Pelswick needs help, the fairy god-parent shows up and asks the most ridiculous questions and says things that have nothing to do with any problem. If you can find this show, I recommend checking it out.

Rocko's Modern Life (courtesy of Nickelodeon)

This show is no longer on, but who could ever forget this show. This one is about a wallaby from Australia who lives in O-Town, U.S.A. with his dog spunky. This show has some very interesting charecters. Heffer is one of Rocko's best friends. He is a steer that was adopted by a family of wolves. Heffer eats constantly.  He racked up a 30+dollar bill at a chicken restaurant one time on the show.  His other friend is Filburt. Filburt is a neurotic turtle who has the best one liners anyone can ever come up with for a neurotic turtle. "Oh fish sticks"  "I'm nauseous. I'm nauseous. I'm nauseous", and "Ya turn the page, ya wash your hands. Ya turn the page, ya wash your hands. Ya turn the page, ya wash your hands." Such styles of humor on this show include "Gordon the talking foot", "Really really big man's nipples of the future" and Spunky getting picked up by a pelican on the beach and sold to a fish market as "dog-fish". This was a great show and it was cut down in its prime. Rocko, you are greatly missed.

SHEEP IN THE BIG CITY (courtesy of Cartoon Network)

Before Mo Willems was busy making episodes of "Codename: Kids Next Door", he worked on a show called "Sheep in the Big City". This was about a sheep who lived in a city. The sheep (whose name was "Sheep") had the hots for a poodle that he was always trying to get with. The poodle's owner did not want him anywhere near her precious so she would always beat him up. This show was so corny and so ridiculous that it was funny. With such charecters as "General Specific", "Private Public", and "The Angry Scientist" you can tell what I mean. One skit I can remember, in particular, involved a "complimentary ham sandwhich" that would see somone and immediately "ham it up" with "compliments" A ham sandwhich would say "My you look very lovely today, is that a new hair doo? Oh where did you get that outfit? Are you wearing cologne?"  I was never sure, but on the day that they cancelled this show, I think I heard "Taps" being played very softly in the background of every other show on the air that day. Sheep, we miss you.. baaaaah

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS (courtesy of Nickelodeon)

Most children (as well as a lot of adults) love this show. They love the charecters. They love how Squidward Tentacles always gets the short end of the stick, they love how Eugene H. Krabs is so cheap, they love how Sandy Cheeks is such a misfit but finds a way to belong despite the fact that she's a squirrel who lives under the sea, they love the way Mermaid-man and Barnacle-boy are so old. This show features a lot of funny one liners and good story lines. The way the script works along with the animation is beautiful. It combines physical humor through drawing and the joke comes with it through the voice work. It is amazing how the two work together to make a wonderful show. However. Every rose has its thorn and every Spongebob has its angry right wing wackos. Right-wing nut-job parents have signed many petitions to get this show removed from the airwaves. They will not tolerate their children watching this "TV-Y rated" show. They will not allow their children to play Spongebob: battle for Bikini Bottom, or Revenge of the Flying Dutchman video games. Why? Because they are afraid Spongebob will warp their children's minds. They believe Spongebob to be gay. When I see Spongebob walking in the sunset with a pink starfish naked holding hands, and when I see the 2 figure skating in purple leotards, I'm inclined to agree with them. So he's gay. Should we therefore burn him at the stake? Spongebob means no harm to your children. If these parents are so under confident and so unsure of their parenting ability that they think their kids will listen to a fictional charecter over them, then they have no business being parents. Kids will grow up and see that Spongebob is not real but their parents are. I am not gay but I do NOT have a problem with gay people. I hope Stephen Hillenburg and Nickelodeon do not give in to these maniacs and I hope they do keep bringing the laughs as only they can. Spongebob, I salute you!

TOM AND JERRY (courtesy of Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM))

I salute Tom and Jerry as ICONS in cartoon violence. These two would pull out all the stops. They'd shoot each other, hit each other with maces, break each others teeth open, they would have all out war with each other in each and every show. With so much imitatable violence, I don't think a show like this would be allowed on tv today without a "TV-Y7" rating. The reactions of the mouse and cat when they would get hurt were also priceless. They would even frame each other. I remember one instance in paritcular where the house owner said to Tom, that if he made a mess of the house while she was gone, that Tom would be thrown out into the street. Jerry would juggle plates and fine china, spray ink all over the walls, cover Tom's feet with mud, he even poured a truckload of coal into the living room. Tom and Jerry, I salute you.

CARTOON PLANET (courtesy of Cartoon Network) (honorable mention)

This is another show that you would never know what to expect when you would watch it. It started off with some guy in a Space Ghost costume dancing like a moron, then it would switch to Zorak (the mantis) and Space Ghost arguing and bickering while Brak would go on and ramble and say things like "and then they go out to a fancy shmancy restaurant and the girl orders a salad with vegetables and the guy orders a big hunk of beef and that my friends is love". Such skits on this show included "Zorak, Can You Help Me?" and "Mailbag day" This show was so dumb it was funny. It was very funny and it is missed.
